Greg Carroll is an accomplished musician, singer, songwriter and member of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq band. Greg earned a B.A. in Music (Jazz Studies) from St. Francis Xavier University, studying under renowned bassist Skip Beckwith A versatile performer, Greg has toured and recorded as a bassist with noted artists including Amos Garrett and Chad Brownlee, and with his own band, Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion, which garnered recognition in Rolling Stone magazine in 2018. Greg’s work blends roots and alt country, supported by strong arrangements and seasoned musicianship. Greg’s recent album, ‘Writing on the Wall’ highlights his skill as a songwriter, reflecting the depth of experience gained from decades in the industry.

Born and raised in St. George’s, Newfoundland, Greg’s musical journey began early—he picked up the guitar at nine and by sixteen was already performing bass and vocals in local cover bands. Greg’s professional career took him west to Saskatchewan and Alberta in the 1990s, where he toured extensively with country bands.

Over the years, Greg has performed on upright and electric bass at festivals, theaters, arenas, and award shows; playing with artists such as Amos Garrett, Chad Brownlee, Jess Moskaluke, Lindsay Ell, Elvis’ Imperials, Gene Watson, Moe Bandy, Ian Tyson, Gary Felgard, Charlie Major, Julian Austin, Ariel Posen, and Black Mountain Whiskey Re
Over the years, Greg has performed on upright and electric bass at festivals, theaters, arenas, and award shows; playing with artists such as Amos Garrett, Chad Brownlee, Jess Moskaluke, Lindsay Ell, Elvis’ Imperials, Gene Watson, Moe Bandy, Ian Tyson, Gary Felgard, Charlie Major, Julian Austin, Ariel Posen, and Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion.
His career also includes opening or supporting international acts like Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Sammy Kershaw, Ronnie Dunn, Kim Mitchell, the Kentucky Headhunters, Marty Stuart, and the Barenaked Ladies.

In 2018, Greg reunited with longtime friends to form Black Mountain Whiskey Rebellion as bassist and co-songwriter. Their self-titled debut album featured the single Holy Smoke, highlighted by Rolling Stone Magazine in July 2018.

Inspired by writing trips to Nashville, Greg penned several songs honoring First Nations soldiers, including Never Coming Back From Vietnam, which has been remastered for Greg’s latest album entitled ‘Writing on the Wall.’ Greg’s latest work was produced by Denis Dufresne and boasts legendary guitarists Amos Garrett and Ariel Posen and utility man extraordinaire, Bruce Hoffman. The first single on the album, ‘This Side of the Mountain’ was filmed in beautiful Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and has been well received across the country by CBC, Sirius XM Indigiverse, and local radio stations.

Beyond the stage, Greg is committed to mentorship and cultural storytelling. He has been a proud adjudicator for the Juno Awards and has served as a virtual instructor and mentor for Inuit and northern First Nations youth through Connected North. Today, while easing back from the rigors of touring, Greg continues to write, perform solo shows, and prepare new music releases. Now based in Colchester County, Nova Scotia with his wife, he remains passionate about giving back to the music community and passing on his knowledge to the next generation.
